The Latest In-Depth Carvon EVO 4WD Review

With electric skateboards increasing in popularity with each new day, new electric skateboard brands are emerging with increasing frequency. However, the vast majority of brands do not bring in new technologies to the market. Moreover, their products do not feature any innovation that will push the electric skateboard ream forward. In essence, many of the new brands just rehash what is already in existence and just plaster their brand logo on the products.

This is not the case when it comes to the Carvon EVO 4WD. It uses the 39”Landyachtz EVO deck and the Samsung 30Q battery pack, the Carvon 4WD has a unique driving system. The main innovation that the EVO 4WD brings to the table is the powerful and unique motors – the V4 SpeedDrive R. Rated at 2500 watts, the motors are very powerful making this e-skateboard skateboard a 50 mph electric skateboard. Since it has 4 of such motors, it has a total combined power of 10kw. Aside from being powerful, it is also has a unique design that allows users to change wheels and motor bearing with ease.

Carvon has been involved in the DIY electric skateboard scene for years. Over the years, Jerry, the man behind Carvon attained an intricate understanding of the limitations of the current motors, especially the hub motors. Leaning on their ample experience, the company developed the V4 SpeedDrive motors as a step up to the hub motor technology.

EVO 4WD Features And Their Benefits

This deck is quite stiff board. As such, it does not work very well at lower speeds, especially when it comes to curving. However, the stiffness does help a great deal with stability at high speeds, helping negate the possibility and extent of speed wobbles. The board has been designed and optimized for high speeds. With the Carvon having a top speed of 50mph, stability at high speeds is very important; having a stiff deck is a must for these kinds of speeds.

4 V4 SpeedDrive Racing Sensored Motors

Carvon 4WD In-depth review - wheels

No Carvon EVO 4WD review is complete without talking about its unique motors. With a total output power of 10kw, this electric skateboard has powerful motors with exceptional performance. The motors produce the perfect balance between speed and torque. The Carvon EVO 4WD has a 50mph (80kmh) top speed, making it among the fastest electric skateboards you can buy. As for its hill climbing capability, the Carvon Evo 4WD can climb up to a 25% incline.

That being said, it is important to note that the V4 are not technically hub motors by the strict defection of hub motors. The motors are not housed inside the wheels, but rather the motors have a wheel adapter that extended from the motor for the wheels to attach to. This is called a direct drive motor layout.

For power storage, it comes with Samsung’s 12s5p 30Q battery pack. This battery pack can power the EVO 4WD for up to 25 miles (40km) while being able to power the e-board to a top speed of 50mph.

Full-Urethane Wheels

The Carvon EVO 4WD comes with 107mm wheels that are full urethane. Using this kind of wheels is possible as the motors are not hub motors. As such, the wheels do not have to sacrifice urethane thickness to accommodate the motors.

The main benefit of the full urethane wheels is durability. Since the urethane is thicker, it will last hundreds or even thousands of miles before wearing off.

Potting Of The PCB Electronics

Carvon is one of the very few e-skateboard manufacturers to implement potting on the PCB electronics and other electronic components. In doing this, they make their electric skateboards very resistant to vibration and shock. Importantly, they potting agents encloses the circuit board and other electronic components, making them completely waterproof and safe from corrosion.

Potting also protects the chips and solder joints. They are protected from cracking and or breaking. Consequently, the Carvon 4WD ends up as a very durable electric skateboard that can take the rigors of daily use.

Evo Carvon 4WD Review: The Good And The Bad

To get a feel of what you get when you buy a Carvon 4WD, let’s look at the pros and cons it comes with.

The Pros

Comes With An Innovative Motor Design And Layout – The most notable benefit of the direct drive layout is the ability to swap wheel on a dime. You do not have to disassemble the entire motor to remove the wheels. You simply remove the attached wheels and swap in your preferred wheels.

It’s Fast – The Clear benefit of investing in an EVO 4WD is the exceptional speed it has. There are plenty of features that it comes with but its speed is the standout quality. Very few electric skateboards can reach 50 mph. As such, if you are a speed junky, this is a good choice.

The Carvon EVO 4WD Has Exceptional Coasting Capability – EVO 4WD has praised the coasting capability it has. If you hate the coasting experience that comes with the motorized skateboards, then this is the board for you. Its coasting capability is as close to a traditional longboard. You can coats very far while on flat ground.

The Drop-Down Deck Design – Positions the rider lower to the ground for increased stability. It is very stable at high speeds. The design of the deck also yields better and enhance feel when compared to typical deck designs.

It Is Very Silent – The Lack of belts means that there are fewer moving parts. Moreover, the direct-drive system is exceptionally silent, something that is great for the rider and those around him or her.

Full-Urethane Wheels – You get a much safer and very comfortable ride. The wheels are resistant to deformations, a phenomenon that would lower the range and an utterly uncomfortable ride. You can change the wheels easily without having to remove the motor, which is good. It is always prudent electric skateboard users to rotate the wheels around for more even wear. The wheels are also very durable.

The Motor Is Not Stressed As Much – Since the weight of the rider is transferred to the wheel bearing rather than the motor and the motor bearings, the motor assembly tends to last longer.

The Cons

Less Than Stellar Low-End Torque – The low-end torque is not great owing to the design of motors – they are optimized for speed. However, hit around 20 mph and the e-board comes alive. It just keeps on pulling and pulling and pulling.

It’s Heavy – The four motors, the heavy battery, and the beefier deck add to the weight of this board. The EVO 4WD is the easiest of electric skateboards to carry around.

The Underside Scraps A Lot – The drop-down design of the deck has been designed to increase stability at high-speed. However, this leaves the deck susceptible to scrapping. As such, you cannot ride this e-board off-road or even uneven pavements with the stock wheels.

Carvon 4WD: Things You Have To Overcome Before Using The EVO 4WD

The first thing you have to overcome is the long wait period. As per their official website, there is a 3-5 week build-time you have to wait even before shipping. This stems from the fact that Carvon does not prebuild Evo 4WD. Every board is built upon placing an order. This can be frustrating for some people.

From my research, Carvon isn’t taking orders anymore. Their website is down and many of their initial backers have not received their products yet. We’ll update the post once they start taking orders.

Another thing you have to overcome is the hefty weight of the EVO 4WD. The weight of the board makes this board exceptionally cumbersome to carry around. Quite frankly, EVO 4WD is not a good daily driver keeping in mind that you might have to carry it at some point. The lack of a carry handle does not help negate the situation.

You also have to overcome any fear of high-speed. If you are comfortable with high-speed cruising on an electric skateboard, this should not be a big issue. However, if you are new to high-speed cruising, you need to slowly hone your high-speed riding skills. That being said, you should always ensure you ride safely. Given the capability of this electric skateboard, you do not want to ride it without the necessary safety gear. However, if you are not comfortable with high-speeds, just stick to low-speed riding.

An In-Depth Carvon Evo 4WD Review: The Bottom Line

If you are looking for a fast e-skateboard that has been designed for stability and built for durability, the Carvon EVO 4WD is a very good option. It has an innovative design consisting of a drop-down deck, the direct-drive motor, the robust build makes this particular electric skateboard a good buy.

However, given the poor customer service that Carvon has, it might not be the best option. The reports of delayed fulfillment of orders is a cause for concern. If you want to receive your electric skateboard as soon as possible, it is far better to purchase the alternative electric skateboards that are equally fast until Jerry sorts out the manufacturing issues that are causing delays. However, if you are willing to wait, the Carvon EVO 4WD you will get one of the fastest electric skateboards on the market.
